Victoria Salmon Kings Drop Aces

Victoria’s Olivier Filion leads way with four point effort to secure 6-2 victory over Alaska.

Victoria, BC – In a Thursday evening matchup the Victoria Salmon Kings and Alaska Aces met for the first of a three-game set at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. Victoria’s Glenn Fisher got the nod in net while Alaska started Frank Doyle.

The Salmon Kings opened the scoring at the 7:20 mark of the first period on Lance Morrison’s second goal of the season. Adam Taylor released a shot from the slot that was stopped by Doyle with Morrison burying the rebound past the Aces’ netminder. Victoria jumped to a 2-0 lead at the 12:46 mark when Chad Painchaud picked up the loose puck from the top of the crease and fired a backhand shot past the glove of Doyle. For Painchaud it was his 20th goal of the campaign. The Salmon Kings extended their lead to 3-0 while on the power play at the 16:35 mark. Brandon Roach took a slap shot from the right point that was saved by Doyle with Wes Goldie picking up the rebound and slipped the wrist shot past Doyle’s glove. The goal was Goldie’s 33rd of the season. Victoria took their 3-0 lead into the second period.
Alaska would get on the board while on the power play just 48 seconds into the middle frame. Nick Tuzzolino released a snap shot from the high slot that was redirected past the right pad of Fisher by Nick Mazzolini.  The goal marked Mazzolini’s 17th of the campaign. The Salmon Kings took a 4-1 lead while on the power play at the 2:22 mark. Olivier Filion picked up the puck off an Evan Kotsopoulos whiffed pass in the right face off circle. The Salmon Kings’ forward drove the puck to the front of the net, but Doyle was there to make the save. Matt Siddall went to the net, and slid Filion’s rebound through the pads of Doyle. For Siddall the goal was his 15th of the season and his first as a Salmon King. The Aces cut the deficit to two while on a five-on-three man advantage. Eric Boguniecki finished off a tic-tac-toe passing play, after he received passes from T.J. Fast and Tuzzolino, as he fired a shot blocker side past an outstretched Fisher. Boguniecki’s marker was his 13th of the campaign. Victoria led 4-2 through 40 minutes of play.
