BC Business names Accent Inns one of BC’s Best Companies to Work For
The BC owned and operated hotel chain takes 5th spot in top 10
Dec. 1, 2011, Victoria, BC – The editors of BC Business gave Accent Inns, a proudly BC owned and operated hotel chain, top marks Tuesday night at a ceremony that recognized the province’s Best Companies to Work For. Accent Inns was named 5th out of the 10 winning Best Companies to Work For in the category of More Than 100 Employees. To determine the winners, the team at BC Business graded employee-submitted surveys, each measuring satisfaction and engagement in four distinct areas: talent systems, employee engagement, leadership dynamics and organization culture.
“I’m blown away,” said Mandy Farmer, president of Accent Inns. “Imagine, that in other jobs
you might spend a day building video games, bartending or networking, but my team are making beds and cleaning toilets for a living! It’s one thing to have an independent panel recognize your outstanding business practices – it’s quite another to have your very own staff sing praises about the place they work, day in and day out,” I can’t express how amazed, proud and humbled I am by this team of people.”
Accent Inns opened the doors of its first location (Victoria, BC) 25 years ago under the direction of Farmer’s father, Terry. Since the start, Accent Inns has operated under the philosophy that being a good employer makes for good business – in exchange for offering staff ongoing professional development opportunities, above-industry-standard salaries and benefits and respect, the Farmers have earned surprisingly low turnover rate (nearly 50 per cent of staff have been with the company 10 years or more) and a number of awards.
Other businesses to make the list include Chemistry Consulting Group Inc. in Victoria (first), 1-800-Got-Junk? in Vancouver
(second) and Nurse Next Door Home Healthcare Services Inc. in Vancouver (third). To ensure fairness in determining the winners of this year’s awards, staff at BC Business looked at a number of factors, including the nature of business, number of employees and response rate.
“It’s no secret – all the companies to make the top 10 give employees something greater – the feeling of inclusion, being part of a family,” said Farmer. “We also add in a huge dose of fun into the work place and the result is I get to work with some of the most passionate and talented people you’ll ever meet. Today is a dream come true!”
