Halloween – English or North American

guyfawkesAs many of my readers know, I was born and brought up in England, so Halloween was unknown to me until I moved to Canada almost a quarter of a century ago. When I was a kid we celebrated Guy Fawkes Day (aka Bonfire Night) on November 5th. For several weeks prior to the big day we’d make our ‘Guy’ an effigy of the original Guy Fawkes who was part of a plot, to blow up the U.K. Houses of Lords on November 5th 1605. We’d then take it out onto the streets and basically panhandle – calling “Penny for the Guy, penny for the Guy” and depending on how good your Guy was, passersby would toss some change into your hat. Help Support the Salvation Army at the CHEK TV Drive Thru

December 11th will see the “cast and crew” of CHEK TV descend upon the Accent Inn in Victoria BC. Just like Santa’s Elves’ they will be working hard to to prepare and host the 20th annual CHEK Christmas Drive Thru.

You like grabbing a bite or a coffee at your local drive thru so why not make your donations that way too!

Where else will you find TV personalities and volunteers alike “hustling and bustling” around to unload your donations of goods for the Salvation Army. Sold everything in a garage sale?.. no worries cash donations are more than welcome, in fact a Salvation Army kettle will be on hand and it sure looks great to see it when it’s filled with bills!

Making the experience even better you’ll have the Salvation Army band serenading you with Christmas Carols. Rumor has it that this night is so special, Santa himself has scheduled an appearance! (why is it we never see Jim Beatty and Santa at the same time…..could it be..hmmmm?)

Save-On-Foods World’s Longest Street Hockey game

yst2bYouth Sticking Together the organizing committee for the Save-On-Foods World’s Longest Street Hockey game for charity needs your help!

Would you like to be part of history as it’s happening? Then come out to the opening ceremony for the Save on Foods Longest Street Hockey game. Join Youth Sticking Together at the Nanaimo Curling Centre on June 28. Doors open at 6:00 pm, with formal presentations beginning at 6:30. Proceeds from this event, and money donated at the game itself, will go to support three local youth serving agencies: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Vancouver Island, Nanaimo Youth Ball Hockey and Crimson Coast Dance Society. There will be light refreshments and a silent auction with some amazing items, such as BC Lions tickets, a signed Roberto Luongo photo and more! Tickets are only $20 and will not be sold at the door.

We want to be able to make this event a success for our youth players, and raise as much money for Big Brothers Big Sisters, Crimson Coast Dance Society and the Nanaimo Ball Hockey League.

The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks and Manitoba Moose, announced that they have partnered with the Pacific Salmon Foundation to present the third annual “Eco Night” this Saturday, March 19th versus the Utah Grizzlies. Together with the Foundation, the Salmon Kings will make an effort to promote ecological awareness and restoration of Pacific salmon in British Columbia. Advanced tickets are now available for just $18, with $3 from each purchase donated back to the Foundation. Fans can also receive a great ticket discount just by being eco-friendly and recycling! Anyone who brings a recyclable item by the Select Your Tickets Box Office this Saturday will receive a voucher for a discounted ticket for Eco Night worth $7 off an adult ticket or $4 off any student, senior or child ticket. The Bottle Depot will be on site this Saturday night beginning at 6:00 p.m. collecting all recyclable items. Additionally, all Chuck-a-Puck proceeds from the evening will be donated to the Foundation. The Chuck-a-Puck promotion will give fans the chance to hit as many as three prize targets on the ice: a getaway fishing package for two to the Queen Charlotte Islands courtesy of West Coast Resorts valued at over $5,000, a Rocky Mountaineer trip to Whistler, and a prize package that includes a low-flow toilet and rain barrel.
