What Father’s Day means to us Dads

Victoria hotel employee John Espley and his Daughter

Being a father is a wonderful Experience

This weekend is Father’s day. Last year I presented a blog post about the top 10 things a father and daughter could do together.  This year I thought I’d offer some insights, my observations on what effect being a father has on a fella and in my opinion, the most important thing  Fathers can do for their children.

First off let me give away a secret, dispel a myth, breakdown the facade that us men put forth (sorry guys).  You may see us as macho men, big strong guys that can build anything or tear anything down, the creators of life’s inventions, the leaders of men, captains of industry, masters of our domains and the heads of the household (ok I was pushing it on that last one…). In truth we are at our very best , pushed to achieve, most vulnerable and most satisfied when we are known as “Dad”.  Now I know some of you may scoff at this notion, believe that I exaggerate but alas I have real proof. Accent Inns BC Hotel receives Legion Recognition plaque presentation Nov 2010

Dave Sinclair Pres BC/Yukon Command presents Accent Inns recognition plaque. John Espley received on behalf.

For several years now Accent Inns has been a supporter of The Royal Canadian Legion BC/Yukon Command. This past weekend the Accent Inn BC hotel chain was honored with a plaque recognizing our partnership. Mr. Dave Sinclair, President of The Royal Canadian Legion BC/Yukon, presented John Espley on behalf of Accent Inns with award and several kind words at the legions Britannia branch (very close to the Accent Inn Victoria hotel). Why is it important that Accent Inns works with such a group…..

The Royal Canadian Legion is a very special organization in that it has not only a long history but serves a wide and diversified role in our communities. The first thing that may come to mind is veteran’s services and the poppy campaign. For the past 81 Years, The Royal Canadian Legion has been devoted to caring for Canada’s veterans and their families and working with current serving members of the Canadian Armed Forces by providing: Veterans Transition Program, Military Family Resource Centers, Overseas Blankets of Hope for Injured Personnel, Support for the Troops Morale Fund, Government Advocacy, Acts of Remembrance. Lessons From the Land and Sea – and people

Lessons from the Land and Culture

This recent article (Lessons From the Land and Sea) by the Sierra Club of BC (Accent Inns is a supporter) really touches on several areas of interest or connection for those of us that live and work in B.C.  This caught my attention as an Accent Inns team member because we are proud to work with so many of the local first nations bands around BC, support groups like the Sierra club of BC in their efforts to protect our local environment and the fact that Eco-tourism is an important part of our economy, makes this article by the Sierra club well worth the read.   (more…)

Ice Cream plus a little effort equals a smile

ice cream equals smiles

You don’t need a truck and a catchy little tune to hand out ice cream and make people smile.  My community relations work for Accent Inns is one of the most rewarding and wonderful things I do. Recently during a very warm day here in Victoria, I had the opportunity to volunteer with several other gentlemen and serve ice cream to a large number of seniors and disabled residents at a local Hospital. Every year a good friend of mine named Stephen Godfrey, a member of Haida Lodge, a local Masonic lodge, organizes fellow freemasons to donate and serve ice cream to patients in the extended and acute care wards of a local hospital.

How do you handle time management?

Time Management shouldn't be so confusing

Time Management: Mystery or Magic?

Ok here we go into the wonderful and sometimes mystical world of “time management”.

When you ask  many young and even seasoned professionals about their time management skills they suddenly lower the head and speak into their chest just like a child who knows he’s done something wrong.  Time management is a powerful tool and I’ve met several successful business people and athletic achievers that tout it as “their” secret to success. A couple of great examples for my are my former boss and mentor, Terry Farmer, and many of the excellent athletes that make up the Camosun Chargers College athletic program. These “kids” really have it together! We all know we need time management skills but either feel like we’ve never really achieved what we need to, or even worse, are completely intimidated by the subject. Find your examples as I have. They are all around you I promise. (more…)

Anne-marie and her Dad

Anne-marie and her Dad

With Father’s day just around the corner I began thinking of all the wonderful things that a Dad could do with his daughter. Am I qualified to write such a list? Well the fact that I was a kid once myself (hard to believe I know…), I had an awesome father who really showed me and taught me about the world around us, and the most import reference I can offer is that I am the father of  beautiful, talented  9 year old Anne-Marie.

So with all those qualifications and the thoughts of father’s day looming, in this article I have reflected on some of the ideas and things I have done and shared with my daughter of the past many years.

Power to play 2010 Accent Inn Dusters

Power to play 2010 Accent Inn Dusters

Several months ago Mandy Farmer, the President of Accent Inns put the word out that she was looking for volunteers to participate in the Power to Play adventure race. The race is in support of the great work done by the Power to Be organization with challenges designed by Anthony Bishop who also designs for the TV shows Survivor and the Amazing race. Always having community spirit and a sense of adventure it didn’t take long for several volunteers to come forth from the Head office staff and so was born the Accent Inn “Dusters”. The intrepid volunteers (or sacrifices depending on your perspective) were Dave Splawski, Chris Knight, John Espley and our “fearless leader” Mandy Farmer. (more…)
