Motorcycle Friendly Hotel Manager Races in the 46th Baja 1000 #5

rm 675-paulOur chase trucks start to meet up now as the 2 in the south head north and meet the west coast truck.  Around 8pm we all meet on the side of the road at race mile 670.  Paul is ready to get on the relay bike and does so around 930pm.  Mladen has had a good section.  A small mechanical problem when the fuel line cracked and the bike stopped but he was able to make the repair quickly with the tools he had.  The bike has been going for 22 hours straight now.  Pretty amazing that has been the only issue. Motorcycle Friendly Hotel Manager Races in the 46th Baja 1000 #4

group shot1With pre running all complete and only a few days until race day, it was time to organize our plan.  All riders finished practicing their sections without injury, goal #1.  We would have 5 vehicles on race day chasing the 3 race bikes.  Each vehicle would have a spare bike on board that parts could be robbed off if needed.  Other items on board would include satellite phones, food, water, tools, first aid kits, a spare rider, etc.  Basically we would have 2 trucks servicing the bikes in the centre of the Baja peninsula and east coast.  The other 3 trucks would take care of the bikes down in the southern portion and on the west coast. Desert Camp Out

Watch out for those scorpion’s

With a week or so to go till race day, the rest of the team showed up.  The adventure really got exciting when 5 of us went to pre run race mile 385 to 525.  The day started great as usual, until we entered 10 miles of 3 foot deep silt beds.  A fine sand like substance that just floats in the air, clogging and killing motors in cars and bikes.  At race mile 430, my bike decided it had had enough.  2pm and David and I are sitting in the desert with a broken bike, 80 miles from the nearest accessible road.  Another racer comes along and we ask him to let Mladen ( another one of our guys ahead ) know we are stuck.  A few hours later, Mladen shows up and we try for hours to figure the bike out.  Nothing works. Motorcycle Friendly Hotel Manager Races in the 46th Baja 1000 #2

photo 2Pre running the course is so important for the race.  It allows you to see all the hazards before race day so you can ride your fastest when it matters.  The course also changes so much during the 2 weeks leading up to the race as you have 300 plus vehicles doing the same thing as you.  So nice sandy roads turn into torn up, whooped out, silt infested trails.  Good times. Training for Baja 1000For me, this crazy dream all started in 2008 when a good friend of mine and owner of Action Motorcycles, invited me on a dirt bike trip to a little town on the Sea of Cortes, San Felipe Baja Mexico.  This sounded like a fun adventure.  I had no idea that 6 trips later over 5 years, would have us lined up to race the toughest non-stop off-road race in the world. A Victoria BC Hotel Manager racing the 46th Baja 1000, who would have imagined that? (more…)
