I love hanging baskets, they are so European. When the City of Victoria first started hanging flower-laden baskets from lamp posts throughout the downtown in 1937 it was rare to see these summer delights in North America. This year will be the 79th year visitors to this fine city will be treated to a floral display second to none – hanging baskets and Victoria are synonymous. This year 1,350 baskets will be hung up during the second week in June, each containing 25 plants and weighing around 20 kilograms. (more…)

Victoria Day is unique to Canada, nowhere else in the world do they celebrate Queen Victoria’s birthday. It was first declared the Queen’s official birthday in 1845 and became the public holiday known as Victoria Day after her death in 1901. The day actually celebrates two Queen’s birthdays (Victoria’s actual birthday on May 24th) and Elizabeth II (it is by legislation her official birthday in Canada). It is always celebrated on the Monday prior to May 24th. This year Victoria Day will be on Monday May, 23rd. (more…)

I’ve always loved Mother’s Day, it’s a time where we get to show our Mothers how much we value them, how much we appreciate what they do for us. In years gone by I always tried to make the day special for my Mum (English-speak for Mom) even though rarely in my adult life did we live close to each other.
After my children were born, making Mother’s Day special for my wife became just as important. When the boys were younger we always tried to make the day special. Even now they are adults I contact them a week or so before the big day to plan what we’ll do. (more…)
Christmas is a time to be together. To celebrate those we love and remember those who have loved and supported us. As we are 2 days away from Christmas we want to say thanks to all of our wonderful customers that have been there for us this year. This is the time of year we look forward to celebrating with our families and welcoming those who have travelled and are staying while they visit their families. For those who celebrate Hanukkah or other holidays we wish you the best of the season as well. One thing we believe in at Accent Inns is diversity. We celebrate it with our diverse staff, customers and in support of several community organizations. It’s what makes Canada so wonderful.
Speaking of wonderful, thanks to all the incredible community and not-for-profit groups we have had the privilege to work with this past year. You make it possible for so many to have a Christmas or holiday celebration. You bring families together. You make families whole. You even help create families. You bring us together with pets that offer unconditional love. You teach us about our environment. You find ways to help people get well and support those who are not. You find ways fund research so that others can get better and hold our hands when we have to say goodbye to those we love. Thanks to all of you that have helped wipe our tears, given us hugs and made us smile.
Merry Christmas to all!
October 2, 2015: New Westminster, B.C. – The Family Support Institute Board of Directors, over the last several years, has been contemplating how FSI can be better represented as having a provincial scope. Their official name was the West Coast Family Support Institute Society which implied that they only served families living on the Westcoast of BC, when they actively serve people ALL ACROSS our province. At FSI’s AGM on June 12, 2015, the membership unanimously voted to approve a special resolution to approve a society name change from the “West Coast Family Support Institute Society” to the “Family Support Institute of BC Society” (FSIBC). They feel this name change will help people to see that they are a provincial society in all aspects of their work. (more…)
Spring and summer this year has been hot and dry and what that means to me is getting out on, or in the water. This year my wife and I are planning a vacation close to home, which means British Columbia. It got me thinking about what water sports activities we could do around the province, and close to an Accent Inns hotel.
My first thought was Kelowna and Lake Okanagan which has hundreds of beaches and places to swim. It was then that I thought about trying something a little different this year and came up with a few water sports I haven’t tried, or at least not here at home. (more…)
When my children were young, my job involved travelling extensively around Europe and North America and I was forever saying to a business colleague or client while in some strange foreign clime, “I wish my wife could see this” or, “My son Joshua, or Adam would have loved to play on that.” Looking back I don’t know why I never thought to take them, but it was probably because they all involved several expensive flights. December 11th will see the “cast and crew” of CHEK TV descend upon the Accent Inn in Victoria BC. Just like Santa’s Elves’ they will be working hard to to prepare and host the 20th annual CHEK Christmas Drive Thru.
You like grabbing a bite or a coffee at your local drive thru so why not make your donations that way too!
Where else will you find TV personalities and volunteers alike “hustling and bustling” around to unload your donations of goods for the Salvation Army. Sold everything in a garage sale?.. no worries cash donations are more than welcome, in fact a Salvation Army kettle will be on hand and it sure looks great to see it when it’s filled with bills!
Making the experience even better you’ll have the Salvation Army band serenading you with Christmas Carols. Rumor has it that this night is so special, Santa himself has scheduled an appearance! (why is it we never see Jim Beatty and Santa at the same time…..could it be..hmmmm?)
Please join us December 11th from 5 – 7pm at the Accent Inn at the corner of Blanshard and Cloverdale and help support those in need!
