Sierra Club BC depends on volunteers for many things – from helping us plan certain events, to reaching out and thanking our donors. You can find a volunteer in our office almost any day of the year, working on a project. For example, Diane worked diligently through much of the winter, digging through our archives (which go back to Sierra Club BC’s founding in 1969) for a history project that we can’t wait to reveal. Digital devices are everywhere. Cell phones, tablets and laptops have—especially for young people like my two daughters, aged 11 and 14—replaced cable television for entertainment. All the content you could imagine is available through YouTube, Netflix and other video streaming services. These amazing devices also allow instant communication, via Snapchat, WhatsApp and plain “old fashioned” texting, and incredible, often addictive games to suit every age group and taste. (more…)

Wikipedia defines Earth days as follows: Earth Day is an annual event, celebrated on April 22, on which events are held worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental protection. This past weekend I had the fun of attending the Banff Mountain Film Festivals Radical Reels world tour presentation. Accent Inns partnered with the Sierra Club of BC to bring this event to Victoria. As with previous years the films did not disappoint. The audience was either laughing at the gags, saying oooohhh to the incredible scenery or ooouuucchhh as some of the folks in the film didn’t fair so well when meeting with a tree or handrail. Yesterday was Earth Day which was a perfect opportunity for me to reflect.
I’m thrilled to congratulate my whole team on achieving and maintaining a rating of 4 Green Keys! Yes, that’s right, all five of the Accent Inns throughout BC are rated as Four Green Key Properties by the Hotel Association of Canada. This is the second highest available rating and one that shows national industry leadership and commitment to protecting the environment through wide ranging policies and practices. (more…)
