Terry Farmer Tours Okanagan Wineries!

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

Terry Farmer likes a nice wine!

Well Leslie & I just completed our annual wine tasting (and purchases) and it was just as enjoyable as in previous years.
We only spent 2 nights this time and stayed of course at the Accent Inn Kelowna and enjoyed some really nice meals at the ABC Restaurant,  located at the hotel.

We did the art and specialty galleries in Kelowna, plus wine shops and then preceded to the Naramata Wineries on the second day, returning to Kelowna for the evening.
We did the Osoyoos and Oliver wineries on our 3rd day, on our way back to the coast. (more…)

Terry farmer jumps for joy - Victoria hotel chain, Accent Inns Celebrates 25 years in business

Terry Farmer founder of the BC hotel chain excited over Accent Inns awesome success

25 years of BC success adds up to good things for Accent Inns

June 30, 2011, Victoria, BC – Although the BC owned and operated hotel chain Accent Inns has undergone many changes during its 25 year history (including its name, ownership and décor), one thing that’s never wavered is the hotels’ values and community commitment.

“Accent Inns has always stood strong on a number of principles – and being a good employer has always taken the top spot,” said Mandy Farmer, CEO of Accent Inns. “While we pride ourselves on providing great value, cleanliness and customer service to our guests, we couldn’t do any of it if we didn’t have such great staff.”

A testament to Farmer’s dedication to her staff is Accent Inns’ low staff turnover – 48 per cent of the hotel line’s current employees have been with the company for 10 years or more. (more…)

Confession: Today is our 25th anniversary.

Accent Inns anniversary rubber duck

Accent Inns 25th anniversary rubber duck

25 years ago my dad Terry made the drastic decision to take a complete left turn in his career, leaving the construction industry to dip his toes into the fun, vibrant world of tourism.  Where was I during this chaotic time in his life? Did I even notice what was up with my dad? Well, I was an oblivious little 12 year old, being chauffeured around in the back seat of station wagon, and you know what? I did notice something weird happening.  My dad started humming.  He’d hum in this high pitched, off key sort of jubilant way.  When I’d say to him, “um, Dad? You’re like totally embarrassing me in front of my friends?!” he wouldn’t know what I was talking about!  “I’m not humming” he’d protest! (more…)

What Father’s Day means to us Dads

Friday, June 17th, 2011
Victoria hotel employee John Espley and his Daughter

Being a father is a wonderful Experience

This weekend is Father’s day. Last year I presented a blog post about the top 10 things a father and daughter could do together.  This year I thought I’d offer some insights, my observations on what effect being a father has on a fella and in my opinion, the most important thing  Fathers can do for their children.

First off let me give away a secret, dispel a myth, breakdown the facade that us men put forth (sorry guys).  You may see us as macho men, big strong guys that can build anything or tear anything down, the creators of life’s inventions, the leaders of men, captains of industry, masters of our domains and the heads of the household (ok I was pushing it on that last one…). In truth we are at our very best , pushed to achieve, most vulnerable and most satisfied when we are known as “Dad”.  Now I know some of you may scoff at this notion, believe that I exaggerate but alas I have real proof. Terry Farmer enjoys `semi-retirement`

On Thursday April 28, 2011 friends, colleagues and supporters gathered at Tourism Victoria’s annual general meeting witnessed Terry Farmer being named this year’s Life Member award recipient. “A successful entrepreneur, tireless volunteer and beloved employer, Terry Farmer, founder of the Accent Inns Hotel Chain, has made British Columbia a better place to live, work and play,” said a long time employee with the locally owned and operated hotel chain and those words were repeated as Dave Cowan, GM of the World Famous Butchart Gardens named Terry farmer as the first ever recipient.

No matter who describes his work ethic – loyal employees of Accent Inns, tourism operators who have enjoyed his vision and expertise, or his family who are following in his management footsteps – they all reply that Terry Farmer is a man who cares deeply about people, his community, the environment, and tourism in this province.

Terry is past president of the B.C. Chamber of Commerce, past director of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, founding chair of Pacific Sport National Training Centre-Victoria, and past chair of Tourism Victoria, the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce and the Oak Bay/Greater Victoria Summer Games. Family Businesses: The Secrets of Successful Succession Part 2

Mandy Farmer shows off the new look of Accent Inns

Mandy Farmer shows off the new look of Accent Inns

So where did I leave you last week?  I had no expectations of ever talking over the family business, I worked elsewhere before working for my dad, and I continued to learn the business from experts (other than my father)  by continuing to work outside the family business.  So now what?

Learn All Aspects of the Business.  Finishing an undergrad at McGill University marked my return to Accent Inns.  With a Psych Degree under my belt and no brainwaves about what to do with it, I humbly accepted a job in the family business.  Luckily I didn’t have to clean rooms again, nor go back to the front desk where I began.  But there were other places I’d never tried, such as the sales team.  Cold calling was such a great skill to learn that I recommend it to all the young women that I mentor.  Learning to pick up the phone, walk confidently through a door that says No Soliciting, squelch that fear in your stomach while you bravely make the ask and fine tuning those public speaking skills. No matter what job you end up in, you’ll always have to convince someone of something. Sales experience rocks. (more…)

Family Businesses: The Secrets of Successful Succession Part 1

Monday, February 28th, 2011
Mandy Farmer, President of Accent Inns

Mandy Farmer, President of the family business

I personally love family businesses, and not just because I am in one!  I love how it can give people the opportunity to fast track themselves to their full potential.  I love how family businesses seem to have more values, ethics and personality rather  than the faceless “Big Boys”.  I love how family relationships can turn exponential when a father becomes a friend, a colleague, a business partner.

Of course, family businesses can go the other way. I can’t think of anything worse when family relationships turn sour because of the business. I’m a firm believer that the family has to come first.  As for myself; we are a 3rd generation family business and I confess, we’ve gotten darn good at succession issues.  I continually get asked how we did it, so here are my Secrets to Successful Succession, keeping not only the business in tact but more importantly our relationship. The attached video shows  Accent Inns founder and Chairman, Terry, more recently cleaning rooms and doing maintenance at both our Kamloops hotel and our Victoria hotel. This particular efforts was as a reward to our staff for the great fundraising effort everyone in the BC  hotel chain did for the Power to Play event.  Every Accent Inn is owned and operated by the Farmer family with Mandy Farmer being the current President and CEO. Terry and Mandy have never been afraid of getting in and supporting our team and they always make an effort to know each one of our staff (around the province) by name!

This July Alex Fraser, son of the famous Julia Fraser (Regional Sales Manager for Accent Inns Kelowna and Kamloops) won a silver medal at the BC Summer Games in Langley. Alex played for the Thompson-Okanagan Team which finished 1st in their pool which earned them a semi-final game against Vancouver Island. In the semi-final game, they defeated Vancouver Island 8-7 (tough for Accent Inn Victoria staff routing for the Vancouver Island team). “It was a thrilling game and it was probably the best the Thompson-Okanagan Team has ever played”, said Julia Fraser, Regional Sales Manager and proud Mom. In the Championship Final for the Gold, they lost a heartbreaker to Fraser River/Delta 6-3 (a tough loss for our Accent Inn Vancouver Airport staff)

“Iron Man” Alex Fraser played all 5 games, pitched and played first base.
