Taking a good look into the mirror

Travelling in British Columbia this summer never looked so good

August  07, 2012, Victoria, BC – Accent Inns’ easy-to-spot, iconic blue roofs haven’t changed, but just about everything beneath them has– from the renovated exteriors, updates to the interiors of all five properties —  and a very cool change in the  brand  image and story.

Now sporting refreshed exteriors in shades of, taupe, grey and green, entrance pillars refinished in natural stone and glass balconies to open up the views, Accent Inns has a warmer, more welcoming West Coast feel and is working harder than ever to live their new “stay local, stay real” tag line.

“As we finished our renovations late last year, we felt it was time to check in and see what our potential customers thought of Accent Inns,” says Mandy Farmer, president of Accent Inns. “The focus group results were shocking. Going by our name and look, many people thought we were an American owned run of the mill chain. For a company that is owned and operated by a BC family, we were heart broken. It was time to become better at telling and living our brand story.” ...read more on what's changed

Travelling with your Grandchildren

Grandkids helping Granpa to load car

This is a great time in our lives when we’re able to travel on our own as well as go on trips with our wonderful grandchildren. We can include the kids parents (our children) or not, and gear our travel and activities to our grandchildren of all ages. Sometimes the kids are even more well behaved without their parents! However having the parents included is less responsibility on us and creates great quality family time. The grandchildren are so appreciative and it is absolutely fantastic to strengthen our rapport with our younger generation. The wonderful memories created on these trips will stay with them for the rest of their lives, and long after we have gone.

Most grandparents are a little intimidated about keeping the youngsters occupied, so I have
attempted to list a number of activities at all our hotels throughout this magnificent province of ours. The only thing you have to do is match up which activities are most appropriate for the ages of your

grandchildren and then call our central reservations and book your trip.

Terry Farmer Founder & Chairman, Accent Inns

Below is a reprint of the Victoria Chamber Awards Gala program where Friday April 27, Terry Farmer was given the Lifetime Achievement Award.

After all, if he hadn’t offered to lend a hand to help his father and partner build the Chateau Victoria he might never have realized just how much more fun he could have in hospitality rather than a career in banking, property management or construction.

Anyone who knows Terry, knows that he isn’t content to rest on his laurels. Positive change has been a staple of his life. Terry’s advice to the graduates of Royal Roads at their 2007 Convocation, “… as life moves on over the years do not hesitate to change your area of work should opportunities arise. When they do you should do your due diligence and then strike out quickly, especially if you have a chance to get out on your own and become an entrepreneur. I did this 21 years ago and it was the most thrilling and challenging stage of my career (aside from getting married of course).” Read more about Accent Inns Founder

Terry Farmer likes a nice wine!

Well Leslie & I just completed our annual wine tasting (and purchases) and it was just as enjoyable as in previous years.
We only spent 2 nights this time and stayed of course at the Accent Inn Kelowna and enjoyed some really nice meals at the ABC Restaurant,  located at the hotel.

We did the art and specialty galleries in Kelowna, plus wine shops and then preceded to the Naramata Wineries on the second day, returning to Kelowna for the evening.
We did the Osoyoos and Oliver wineries on our 3rd day, on our way back to the coast. ...read more on taking an Okanagan Wine tour

Terry Farmer founder of the BC hotel chain excited over Accent Inns awesome success

25 years of BC success adds up to good things for Accent Inns

June 30, 2011, Victoria, BC – Although the BC owned and operated hotel chain Accent Inns has undergone many changes during its 25 year history (including its name, ownership and décor), one thing that’s never wavered is the hotels’ values and community commitment.

“Accent Inns has always stood strong on a number of principles – and being a good employer has always taken the top spot,” said Mandy Farmer, CEO of Accent Inns. “While we pride ourselves on providing great value, cleanliness and customer service to our guests, we couldn’t do any of it if we didn’t have such great staff.”

A testament to Farmer’s dedication to her staff is Accent Inns’ low staff turnover – 48 per cent of the hotel line’s current employees have been with the company for 10 years or more. ...read more about Accent Inn 25 year anniversary

Confession: Today is our 25th anniversary.

Accent Inns anniversary rubber duck

Accent Inns 25th anniversary rubber duck

25 years ago my dad Terry made the drastic decision to take a complete left turn in his career, leaving the construction industry to dip his toes into the fun, vibrant world of tourism.  Where was I during this chaotic time in his life? Did I even notice what was up with my dad? Well, I was an oblivious little 12 year old, being chauffeured around in the back seat of station wagon, and you know what? I did notice something weird happening.  My dad started humming.  He’d hum in this high pitched, off key sort of jubilant way.  When I’d say to him, “um, Dad? You’re like totally embarrassing me in front of my friends?!” he wouldn’t know what I was talking about!  “I’m not humming” he’d protest! read more on the 25th anniversary confession

What Father’s Day means to us Dads

Friday, June 17th, 2011
Victoria hotel employee John Espley and his Daughter

Being a father is a wonderful Experience

This weekend is Father’s day. Last year I presented a blog post about the top 10 things a father and daughter could do together.  This year I thought I’d offer some insights, my observations on what effect being a father has on a fella and in my opinion, the most important thing  Fathers can do for their children.

First off let me give away a secret, dispel a myth, breakdown the facade that us men put forth (sorry guys).  You may see us as macho men, big strong guys that can build anything or tear anything down, the creators of life’s inventions, the leaders of men, captains of industry, masters of our domains and the heads of the household (ok I was pushing it on that last one…). In truth we are at our very best , pushed to achieve, most vulnerable and most satisfied when we are known as “Dad”.  Now I know some of you may scoff at this notion, believe that I exaggerate but alas I have real proof. ...read more on the effects of fathers day

Terry Farmer enjoys `semi-retirement`

On Thursday April 28, 2011 friends, colleagues and supporters gathered at Tourism Victoria’s annual general meeting witnessed Terry Farmer being named this year’s Life Member award recipient. “A successful entrepreneur, tireless volunteer and beloved employer, Terry Farmer, founder of the Accent Inns Hotel Chain, has made British Columbia a better place to live, work and play,” said a long time employee with the locally owned and operated hotel chain and those words were repeated as Dave Cowan, GM of the World Famous Butchart Gardens named Terry farmer as the first ever recipient.

No matter who describes his work ethic – loyal employees of Accent Inns, tourism operators who have enjoyed his vision and expertise, or his family who are following in his management footsteps – they all reply that Terry Farmer is a man who cares deeply about people, his community, the environment, and tourism in this province.

Terry is past president of the B.C. Chamber of Commerce, past director of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, founding chair of Pacific Sport National Training Centre-Victoria, and past chair of Tourism Victoria, the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce and the Oak Bay/Greater Victoria Summer Games. more about the victoria hotel chains founder, Terry Farmer.........
