Accent Inns Canuck duck dines with new friends in Machu Picchu

Canuck Duck and Karen meet new friends

Day #1

Our fearless duo have crossed the ocean and begin their journey……..

Our story continues as Canuck Duck tells of meeting new friends and beginning the trek.

The night before:

The first thing that strikes us at the pre-trek briefing is that we are a few years older than our fellow trekkers.  Quite a few years to be exact!  But we have trained.  Karen and I have braved the Everest Base Camp Trek and David has a number of marathons under his belt.  It’s only 4 days.  How hard can it be? Canuck Duck and Karen begin another exciting adventure

Continuing stories of Canuck Duck and his trusty Side Kick, Karen England

Canuck Duck and Karen England from Accent Inns prepare for Machu Picchu.

Over the next several weeks we’ll be publishing the travel notes from Accent Inns own Karen England (sales manager) as she and Canuck Duck travel to and experience the wonders of Machu Picchu.

Their story begins as they prepare to start this epic adventure………..

Planning for the trip

“After my trip to Nepal with Karen England, Accent Inn Sales Manager on Vancouver Island, I thought we would hang up our backpack and spend our vacations at the spa from now on.  However, she has once again convinced me that walking up and down mountains is a good way to spend a vacation.

This time we are taking her husband David with us – a good idea since we will need the extra body heat in that tent when the temperature dips below freezing.

My buddy Lupita that joined us in Nepal will also be travelling with us.  She and her husband, Gordon will be taking the train from Cusco to Machu Picchu.  I guess the train must be very expensive since we have to walk there.

It will take us 4 days to hike from Cusco to Machu Picchu a distance of 45 kilometers.  However, we will be at altitudes of between 3300 and 4200 meters.  As we discovered in Nepal, thin air requires a little extra effort just to breathe.  When she told me we would end up at a lower altitude than where we start, I was thinking it would be a nice little downhill stroll.  However, I believe I am in for some surprises.  Apparently there are an awful lot of ups and downs before we end up DOWN at Machu Picchu.

We will soon be flying from Victoria to Lima.  I am so happy that we are having a Stopover at the Accent Inn Vancouver Airport – no early ferries, no panic over flight delays.  After a good night’s sleep and a free ride to the airport, we will be ready for our very long flight.

My backpack is ready and so am I.  I’ll keep you posted on our progress.”

Stay tuned..the next installment of their story will be posted Thursday July 28

Karen England, Sales Manager for Accent Inns finishing the Victoria Marathon

Karen England, Sales Manager for Accent Inns finishing the Victoria Marathon

The Marathon began  in September 1980 with a single 26.2 mile race and now offers five different events for all ages. What other Marathon can boast a finish line as scenic as Victoria’s inner harbour in front of our famous  historic Parliament Buildings (actually it’s the legislative building but people know it by the “other” name).  I know everyone at the Accent Inn Victoria really enjoys meeting people from all over that come to run in our “famous” marathon. The race attracts people come from all over the globe  including some famous Kenyan participants.  One of the folks running the race this years was Accent Inns own Karen England. We are all very proud of Karen , Accent Inns Regional Sales Manager  Victoria.  She did what many of us would like to do but never seem to get around too. Well done Karen!

Lupita & Canuck in Business Class

Lupita & Canuck in Business Class

I am writing this from Canada where I have returned safe and sound – well maybe not quite sound.  I picked up a stomach bug at the end of the trip and so the last few days weren’t that much fun.  However, the doctor in Hong Kong gave me the right drugs and I am now back to 100% (or as close as a duck can come to 100%). Accent Inns Canuck Duck

Mt. Everest with yak, Tibet, photo by Oriol Gascon (from the web)

Greetings from Lukla.  Unfortunately I am not able to send you any photos but will try to tell you a few tales of my trip.   Because she wasn’t feeling well, we sadly had to leave Lupita in Namche Bazar as Chandra our guide took Karen and me to Dingboche.  It was an amazing trip.  Chandra is our new best friend – an amazing young man of 33 that weighs 120 lbs (with his backpack on) and can carry heavy loads and scamper up and down rocky cliffs without taking his hands out of his pockets.   (more…)

Canuck Duck checking out the view

Today I sit outside the Khumbu Lodge in Namche in the sunshine.  It was been an amazing trip so far.  Our definition of luxury changes every day.  At first it was Business Class and a nice hotel at Hong Kong Airport.  Then it was a day in Kathmandu without a power outage.  Now it is the Khumbu Lodge – a room with electricity, hot water and a western toilet.  I think soon it will be a room with a roof over our heads. Makes me think how wonderful my room is at Accent Inns. (more…)

Accent Inns Canuck Duck

In just a few days we will be off on our big adventure.  Although we have packed way more than we will ever need, there is still a feeling that we must have missed some vital piece of equipment.  For that reason we still seem to be magnetically drawn to every Outdoor Store in Victoria.  Karen is sure that she will find some brand new, amazing, light weight, solar charged something that will make the journey a thousand times easier.  So far she has had no luck. Accent Inns hockey duck

Hi Everybody,
As a former NHL Hockey Player I’ve always felt up to just about any challenge.  Well, perhaps I got a little out of shape while working at Accent Inns but it was never really an issue until the day she joined the team.
