The Blue Roof Believes in Green

Tuesday, July 24th, 2012

We are all trying to be “greener” at home but what about when you travel? Staying in a Hotel like the Accent Inn in Victoria BC  can be a real treat but Hotels are often culprits of excessive waste production. Serving thousands of guests a year, it’s hard to provide the amenities that people want and expect without sacrificing the environment. However, hotels can take action to make operations more sustainable, resulting in large-scale waste reduction.

“It’s a family belief that we just don’t waste”, Mandy Farmer, President & CEO of Accent Inns

Green hotel actions include:

  1. Offer recycle bins throughout the hotel, including in guests’ room
  2. Provide our guests with reusable items such as ceramic cups for coffee
  3. Educate our guests so that we don’t wash towels after every use via good signage that express our water saving effort.
  4. Install low flow showerheads, toilets and faucet aerators
  5. Use non-toxic cleaners that are natural and biodegradable
  6. Use soap dispensers instead of individually packaged soap (saves on packaging waste)
  7. Install energy efficient LED lighting throughout the hotel (LED bulbs use a fraction of the energy and save on costs)
  8. Use bike racks and employee engagement to encourage ridership by both staff and customers. Biking is one of the best ways to tour and experience a new town
  9. Educate our staff about sustainability!

So the Accent Inns with our famous blue roofs sincerely believes in being GREEN.

Travelling with your Grandchildren

Grandkids helping Granpa to load car

This is a great time in our lives when we’re able to travel on our own as well as go on trips with our wonderful grandchildren. We can include the kids parents (our children) or not, and gear our travel and activities to our grandchildren of all ages. Sometimes the kids are even more well behaved without their parents! However having the parents included is less responsibility on us and creates great quality family time. The grandchildren are so appreciative and it is absolutely fantastic to strengthen our rapport with our younger generation. The wonderful memories created on these trips will stay with them for the rest of their lives, and long after we have gone.

Most grandparents are a little intimidated about keeping the youngsters occupied, so I have
attempted to list a number of activities at all our hotels throughout this magnificent province of ours. The only thing you have to do is match up which activities are most appropriate for the ages of your

grandchildren and then call our central reservations and book your trip.

President & CEO says, biking to meetings is easy!

Friday, May 18th, 2012

Accent Inns President makes it look easy

Bike to Work Week is coming up and I often get asked the question, “How do you bike to work when you’re a business person? I don’t have a shower at work and I have appointments that I need my car for. I just can’t do it”.

Of course you can! First off, why on earth do you need your car for appointments?  I ride my bike to meetings and I swear I get there at least 10 minutes before everyone else because I didn’t have to find parking, fiddle with the meter, and then hoof it to the appointment.  The door to door advantage of a bike is huge, not to mention bypassing all the traffic. Terry Farmer knows the power of helping people

Terry Farmer Founder & Chairman, Accent Inns

Below is a reprint of the Victoria Chamber Awards Gala program where Friday April 27, Terry Farmer was given the Lifetime Achievement Award.

After all, if he hadn’t offered to lend a hand to help his father and partner build the Chateau Victoria he might never have realized just how much more fun he could have in hospitality rather than a career in banking, property management or construction.

Anyone who knows Terry, knows that he isn’t content to rest on his laurels. Positive change has been a staple of his life. Terry’s advice to the graduates of Royal Roads at their 2007 Convocation, “… as life moves on over the years do not hesitate to change your area of work should opportunities arise. When they do you should do your due diligence and then strike out quickly, especially if you have a chance to get out on your own and become an entrepreneur. I did this 21 years ago and it was the most thrilling and challenging stage of my career (aside from getting married of course).” (more…)

Terry Farmer likes a nice wine!

Well Leslie & I just completed our annual wine tasting (and purchases) and it was just as enjoyable as in previous years.

We did the art and specialty galleries in Kelowna, plus wine shops and then preceded to the Naramata Wineries on the second day, returning to Kelowna for the evening.
We did the Osoyoos and Oliver wineries on our 3rd day, on our way back to the coast. (more…)

The Ups & Downs of Being a Female CEO

Confession: I’ve cried in a business meeting

Accent Inns BC hotel chain CEO talks about crying

Confession: I've cried in a business meeting.

You do not know what shame that confession brings me.  My only consolation was that I was 7 months pregnant.  Well, the first time it happened.  The second time I have no excuse, other than being female, and in the corporate world tears are not  cool. And that brings me to my topic today:  the  ups and downs of being a female CEO. (more…)

What Father’s Day means to us Dads

Friday, June 17th, 2011
Victoria hotel employee John Espley and his Daughter

Being a father is a wonderful Experience

This weekend is Father’s day. Last year I presented a blog post about the top 10 things a father and daughter could do together.  This year I thought I’d offer some insights, my observations on what effect being a father has on a fella and in my opinion, the most important thing  Fathers can do for their children.

First off let me give away a secret, dispel a myth, breakdown the facade that us men put forth (sorry guys).  You may see us as macho men, big strong guys that can build anything or tear anything down, the creators of life’s inventions, the leaders of men, captains of industry, masters of our domains and the heads of the household (ok I was pushing it on that last one…). In truth we are at our very best , pushed to achieve, most vulnerable and most satisfied when we are known as “Dad”.  Now I know some of you may scoff at this notion, believe that I exaggerate but alas I have real proof. Family Businesses: The Secrets of Successful Succession Part 1

Monday, February 28th, 2011
Mandy Farmer, President of Accent Inns

Mandy Farmer, President of the family business

I personally love family businesses, and not just because I am in one!  I love how it can give people the opportunity to fast track themselves to their full potential.  I love how family businesses seem to have more values, ethics and personality rather  than the faceless “Big Boys”.  I love how family relationships can turn exponential when a father becomes a friend, a colleague, a business partner.

Of course, family businesses can go the other way. I can’t think of anything worse when family relationships turn sour because of the business. I’m a firm believer that the family has to come first.  As for myself; we are a 3rd generation family business and I confess, we’ve gotten darn good at succession issues.  I continually get asked how we did it, so here are my Secrets to Successful Succession, keeping not only the business in tact but more importantly our relationship.
