Anybody that knows me well is very aware that I am easily distracted when I see something shiny. I love colour and light and form and gold and silver and all things bright and beautiful. And that is why I am looking forward to the Vancouver Island Bead and Jewelry Show that is being held on March 1-2, 2014 at the Stellys Fairgrounds in Saanichton. (more…)

Now that we are in February, often thoughts will go to Valentine’s Day. For the next few weeks young couples start getting more “smoochy” than usual. Wives begin saying to themselves, “will he remember this year?” And of course husbands, well husbands just don’t think anything yet. As fun and cute as this all may sound, here in B.C. we now have something else, perhaps more important to think of in February. Family Day. (more…)
Victoria, BC, October 23, 2013 – The Accent Inns hotel chain has made a few changes at their Victoria BC Corporate offices. They welcome Mr. Smith Munro as their new Director of Operations. Smith brings 30 plus years of management experience to the chain. He’s managed a broad spectrum of hotel brands; Intercontinental Hotel group, Holiday Inns, Crowne Plaza hotels and most recently Marriott International. A Scotsman, prior to coming to Canada in 1981, worked with Trust Houses Forte, British Transport Hotels and several other hospitality properties in the United Kingdom. ”For a small chain, Accent Inn’s has certainly done big things. Aside from the usual nightmares that I’m sure everyone has (just last night I woke up to the image of my daughter sinking deeper and deeper vanishing into dark water while I struggled furiously to remove the cross country skies I was bizarrely wearing) there are a few things that scare the pants off me. We are all trying to be “greener” at home but what about when you travel? Staying in a Hotel like the Accent Inn in Victoria BC can be a real treat but Hotels are often culprits of excessive waste production. Serving thousands of guests a year, it’s hard to provide the amenities that people want and expect without sacrificing the environment. However, hotels can take action to make operations more sustainable, resulting in large-scale waste reduction.
“It’s a family belief that we just don’t waste”, Mandy Farmer, President & CEO of Accent Inns
Green hotel actions include:
- Offer recycle bins throughout the hotel, including in guests’ room
- Provide our guests with reusable items such as ceramic cups for coffee
- Educate our guests so that we don’t wash towels after every use via good signage that express our water saving effort.
- Install low flow showerheads, toilets and faucet aerators
- Use non-toxic cleaners that are natural and biodegradable
- Use soap dispensers instead of individually packaged soap (saves on packaging waste)
- Install energy efficient LED lighting throughout the hotel (LED bulbs use a fraction of the energy and save on costs)
- Use bike racks and employee engagement to encourage ridership by both staff and customers. Biking is one of the best ways to tour and experience a new town
- Educate our staff about sustainability!
So the Accent Inns with our famous blue roofs sincerely believes in being GREEN.
This is a great time in our lives when we’re able to travel on our own as well as go on trips with our wonderful grandchildren. We can include the kids parents (our children) or not, and gear our travel and activities to our grandchildren of all ages. Sometimes the kids are even more well behaved without their parents! However having the parents included is less responsibility on us and creates great quality family time. The grandchildren are so appreciative and it is absolutely fantastic to strengthen our rapport with our younger generation. The wonderful memories created on these trips will stay with them for the rest of their lives, and long after we have gone.
Most grandparents are a little intimidated about keeping the youngsters occupied, so I have
attempted to list a number of activities at all our hotels throughout this magnificent province of ours. The only thing you have to do is match up which activities are most appropriate for the ages of your
grandchildren and then call our central reservations and book your trip.
Bike to Work Week is coming up and I often get asked the question, “How do you bike to work when you’re a business person? I don’t have a shower at work and I have appointments that I need my car for. I just can’t do it”.
Of course you can! First off, why on earth do you need your car for appointments? I ride my bike to meetings and I swear I get there at least 10 minutes before everyone else because I didn’t have to find parking, fiddle with the meter, and then hoof it to the appointment. The door to door advantage of a bike is huge, not to mention bypassing all the traffic. (more…)
Below is a reprint of the Victoria Chamber Awards Gala program where Friday April 27, Terry Farmer was given the Lifetime Achievement Award.
After all, if he hadn’t offered to lend a hand to help his father and partner build the Chateau Victoria he might never have realized just how much more fun he could have in hospitality rather than a career in banking, property management or construction.
Anyone who knows Terry, knows that he isn’t content to rest on his laurels. Positive change has been a staple of his life. Terry’s advice to the graduates of Royal Roads at their 2007 Convocation, “… as life moves on over the years do not hesitate to change your area of work should opportunities arise. When they do you should do your due diligence and then strike out quickly, especially if you have a chance to get out on your own and become an entrepreneur. I did this 21 years ago and it was the most thrilling and challenging stage of my career (aside from getting married of course).” (more…)
