I was thinking the other day about all the movies that have been made in B.C. At the time I was watching the Disney made-for-TV movie The Descendants, which was shot in Victoria and excited to see scenes shot inside and outside Hatley Castle at Royal Roads University, where I used to work. Hatley Castle has been used as a location for over 20 movies and television programs including recent Netflix favourites Witches of East End, and The Killing. (more…)

In 2011, and independent action film from Indonesia arrived with little to no fanfare and soon became an international sensation. From writer-director Gareth Evans, and featuring a cast of unknown performers, “The Raid” set new standards for cop dramas. From the dark and dangerous criminal underworld in which the film takes place to the brutal and jaw-dropping highly choreographed fight scenes the film was hard to ignore. (more…)
This June will mark my fourth E3 since we moved terrors on its own but our second office. During my second E3 after the move, Bethesda had a closed-door presentation of their next entry into the phenomenally popular Elder Scrolls series.
Considering that the previous year they had shown off Skyrim prior to its launch, the idea of a massive online version of the fantasy series certainly raised a lot of expectations as well as questions. The game is now released and after spending several hours in the beta as well as several hours with the launch version of the game I’m giving my overview of the game in its current state.
I believe that it is very difficult to review a game of this type because it is a constant changing game set in a constant changing world that doesn’t really have a clear beginning middle or end. (more…)

The Great Tree of Time blooms only during a Grand Conjunction, a short period when all the rotating continents properly align and marks the only time that the Monolith can be reached by foot. The Monolith itself was built during a much earlier epoch (much of its purpose and history lost through the ages). (more…)

Call of Duty: Ghosts gets a much needed update with the release of Onslaught, the first of four planned DLC packs for the game. The new content requires the full version of Ghosts to play and offers up a plethora of content including four new maps, a dual mode weapon, and a new episode of the alien invasion game, Extinction. For me Ghosts was filled with frustration on the multi play side as I found many maps were too large and encouraged camping, which as anyone who has been spawn killed numerous times in a row will tell you, leads quickly to frustration. Being a multi-billion dollar a year industry would to many be a sign that things are being done well. However for every game that does well and breaks the bank, there are scores that fail to find an audience, largely go unnoticed, or worse, cause a developer to fail. I worked at both Monolith and Sierra as I was starting out as a film and game journalist so I have seen how this system works up close and personally for several years in addition to over 20 years as a game journalist.
