The End of Summer Vacation and Back to Work Confession

Friday, September 6th, 2013

What’s your inbox look like after a summer vacation

Without a doubt the worst part about summer vacations is that eventually you have to come back to work. This is coming from a woman who adores her job, loves coming to work on a daily basis, and is eager to get cracking even on Monday mornings… I just don’t like coming back from vacation.
I’m probably one of those people who’d be just fine not taking a vacation as I like my job so that I never feel that I need a break from it. Speaking of breaks, it’s vacations THAT actually seem to break my stride just when I’m on a roll! (more…)

Confession: Rebranding Accent Inns – Why? How? Huh?

Thursday, August 9th, 2012

Accent Inns 3Spot

Eek! I’m so excited! This week, we officially launched our new brand and it’s so electrifying because it completely resonates with who we are. We are so pumped about it I wanted to share with you the story of how it came to be.

Late last year we were just finishing our massive exterior renovations at all 5 Accent Inns when it occurred to us that this was a much needed rebirth for our 26 year old company. Realizing this opportunity, we felt the time was right to take a look at how the marketplace viewed our brand, because if we ever were going to make any changes, this would be the time. (more…)

Confession: I put my oxygen mask on first

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2012

Mandy at the OlympicsYup, I take care of numero uno. I have to because if I don’t, who’s going to do the rah-rah-sis-boom-bah at Accent Inns? I don’t need to tell you that during these never-ending recessionary times a little pom-pom magic is a crucial element of success! I know that a lot of my personal success has to do with bringing energy into the room, whether I’m giving a speech to the Chamber of Commerce or acting as a barometer for my watching team, I need to be at my best. Here are a few things that I do to keep my energy where it needs to be. (more…)

Mandy Farmer Pres of Accent Inns plants BC Dogwood with help from Bill Turner of the TLC

Yesterday was Earth Day which was a perfect opportunity for me to reflect.

I’m thrilled to congratulate my whole team on achieving and maintaining a rating of 4 Green Keys! Yes, that’s right, all five of the Accent Inns throughout BC are rated as Four Green Key Properties by the Hotel Association of Canada. This is the second highest available rating and one that shows national industry leadership and commitment to protecting the environment through wide ranging policies and practices. (more…)

Mandy Farmer surprises the team at the Accent Inns Management Christmas Party

Confession: Last Wednesday was the highlight of my career

Our company Christmas party was held last week and, believe it or not, I think it was the highlight of my career. I realize that is saying a whole lot. I’ve been fortunate enough to have been recognized recently for a few professional awards, but last Wednesday night takes the cake.

First, a little history.  The Christmas party I’m talking about is for all of Accent Inns general managers, sales people, everyone who works here at Head Office and the folks that have retired with us.  I organize the party completely because it’s my way of thanking everyone for taking such good care of me throughout the year.   This year I decided it was going to be a surprise, just to keep everyone guessing. How much should you tip?

Doorman

Confession: I don’t tip doormen.

True, I don’t often stay in places that have doormen, but when I do, I bristle at the fact that people give them neatly folded bills just for opening the door.  And yet I enjoy overtipping when the service dictates it, such as my hairdresser coming in on her day off to hide my grossly grey roots before I head off to an important conference.

One essential service that I feel is drastically under tipped is the housekeeping department in hotels.  We’ll tip the waiter who plunks a coke and cheeseburger in front of us, the cabbie who took us 4 blocks without uttering a word, the concierge for picking up the phone and making us a dinner reservation… but the housekeeper who busts her butt meticulously cleaning our room most often gets only her wages.
