On Friday night (Sept 27) I attended the Camosun Chargers tip-off dinner, auction and first ever Hall of Fame induction Ceremony. Talk about a special night. As always the Chargers team members (students) were there dressed sharply and ready to help all their “guests” lighten their wallets just a bit. Athletes were stationed at every Silent Auction table offering wonderful encouragement and “coaching” as to how we should place our bids. As we sat down to Dinner the MC for the evening , Mira from CTV Sports, turned over the mic to Chargers team members from all the represented sports. One of the students commented during his speech that they hope to be leaders in the future. Let me tell you, these student athletes achieve more than most people just in the two to 4 years they attend college. Their athletic ability is second to none but wait, there’s more, these “kids” are smart. Really smart. They achieve some incredible academic scores, scores that anyone without the rigorous training schedule of a Chargers team member would be proud to have. Watching and listening to these students speak like professional presenters had me thinking to myself, “these young men and ladies and leaders now and we are so lucky to have them in our community.” Credit must also go to the incredible coaches and the support and administration staff that pull the Chargers program together. A true example of the statement, “anythings possible.”

Last Thursday night I had the wonderful opportunity to attend and present at the Camosun College Chargers annual awards night. As with previous years it was a great way to review the incredible year both the teams and student athletes had. It was mentioned that Accent Inns has sponsored the Chargers for 11 years now. Wow! What an honour it has been for our company and certainly for myself (I think I’ve only missed one of the awards banquets).
Once again the MC’s for the evening were Mira Laurence and Jordan Cunningham of CTV Vancouver Island. Not only do these two news and sports media folks know their Chargers but I must say….Billy Crystal watch out, they are headed for the Oscars. They had us laughing all night long. But of course the night wasn’t just about laughs and reviewing the past season but to celebrate some of the awe inspiring efforts put in by the the students, the coaches and the teams as a whole. It should be noted that the Chargers have some of the most dedicated and caring coaches anywhere. I’m glad we also had the chance to applaud the behind the scenes staff. Special thanks from Accent Inns go to Graham Matthews (Athletic Director) and Bonita Joe (Marketing & Communications Officer) for being so awesome to work with and for their sincere focus on helping the students achieve their goals. So read below for an excerpt from the Charger blog listing the many award winners and their achievements.

This is a great re-post of the Chargers announcement.
Today, the Sport Information Resource Centre (SIRC) and the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) announced the 2011-2012 SIRC-CCAA Academic All-Canadian Award recipients and among the 162 student-athletes from across the nation who have achieved combined excellence in collegiate athletics and academics are Jordan Elvedahl and Caitlin Marshall from the Camosun College Chargers basketball program.

The Camosun College Chargers men’s basketball program has ended its four-year absence from the podium at Provincials, finishing third at this year’s PACWEST Championship to bring home Bronze!
Landing Top 3 was no easy feat for the young squad who earned its medal finish amongst teams equipped with considerable size, strength and experience. It was a do or die situation in Thursday’s quarterfinals where the Chargers had to defeat Douglas College, a very dangerous offensive team and the only team in the conference that was able to beat the top-ranked VIU Mariners in the regular season. Camosun managed to pull out the win 68-62, leading the game through all four quarters. (more…)
As the season is nearing the end, local Victoria television station Chek News has this great story on Camosun Chargers Volleyball player Hilary Graham.
