I am writing this from Canada where I have returned safe and sound – well maybe not quite sound. I picked up a stomach bug at the end of the trip and so the last few days weren’t that much fun. However, the doctor in Hong Kong gave me the right drugs and I am now back to 100% (or as close as a duck can come to 100%). (more…)

In February 2010, the Accent Inn Victoria hotel helped the Capital Region Action Team for Sexually Exploited Youth (CRAT) bring Taking Care of Ourselves, Taking Care of Others (TCO2) to Victoria area students. TCO2 is a unique and empowering interactive workshop designed and delivered by youth, for youth about preventing sexual exploitation. Students learn about the issue, learn how to identify predators, recruiters and lurers as well as learning where they can get help within the Greater Victoria area. More than 1600 students within the Greater Victoria area were able to benefit from these presentations. (more…)

The Accent Inns‘ Inn Aid “Charity in Changing Times” seminar was a breath of fresh air, and a welcomed addition outside of my daily routine. I was able to connect with other professionals in the non-profit world and find out our common challenges and provide helpful solutions. Dawn Chubai’s personal approach on how to work with the media was insightful because a large percentage of my work entails gaining media coverage for The Land Conservancy of BC. Her passion for storytelling and representing non-profits in her community is completely sincere and genuine. (more…)
Greetings from Lukla. Unfortunately I am not able to send you any photos but will try to tell you a few tales of my trip. Because she wasn’t feeling well, we sadly had to leave Lupita in Namche Bazar as Chandra our guide took Karen and me to Dingboche. It was an amazing trip. Chandra is our new best friend – an amazing young man of 33 that weighs 120 lbs (with his backpack on) and can carry heavy loads and scamper up and down rocky cliffs without taking his hands out of his pockets. Confession: I have an errand boy.
One of my passions is mentoring young, motivated women. They are normally in their 20’s and have an abundance of charisma and ambition. Without fail, the first question they always ask me is “How do you run a company and have a family? How do you do it all?” With a 2 and a 3 year old at home (and don’t forget that lab retriever) I consider myself a bit of an expert on this. (more…)
Today I sit outside the Khumbu Lodge in Namche in the sunshine. It was been an amazing trip so far. Our definition of luxury changes every day. At first it was Business Class and a nice hotel at Hong Kong Airport. Then it was a day in Kathmandu without a power outage. Now it is the Khumbu Lodge – a room with electricity, hot water and a western toilet. I think soon it will be a room with a roof over our heads. Makes me think how wonderful my room is at Accent Inns. (more…)
In just a few days we will be off on our big adventure. Although we have packed way more than we will ever need, there is still a feeling that we must have missed some vital piece of equipment. For that reason we still seem to be magnetically drawn to every Outdoor Store in Victoria. Karen is sure that she will find some brand new, amazing, light weight, solar charged something that will make the journey a thousand times easier. So far she has had no luck. (more…)
