Family Businesses: The Secrets of Successful Succession Part 2

Mandy Farmer shows off the new look of Accent Inns

Mandy Farmer shows off the new look of Accent Inns

So where did I leave you last week?  I had no expectations of ever talking over the family business, I worked elsewhere before working for my dad, and I continued to learn the business from experts (other than my father)  by continuing to work outside the family business.  So now what?

Learn All Aspects of the Business.  Finishing an undergrad at McGill University marked my return to Accent Inns.  With a Psych Degree under my belt and no brainwaves about what to do with it, I humbly accepted a job in the family business.  Luckily I didn’t have to clean rooms again, nor go back to the front desk where I began.  But there were other places I’d never tried, such as the sales team.  Cold calling was such a great skill to learn that I recommend it to all the young women that I mentor.  Learning to pick up the phone, walk confidently through a door that says No Soliciting, squelch that fear in your stomach while you bravely make the ask and fine tuning those public speaking skills. No matter what job you end up in, you’ll always have to convince someone of something. Sales experience rocks. (more…)

The Fighter

Skewed & Reviewed

One of the young Hollywood stars I’ve certainly enjoyed watching is Christian Bale. I think he did a fantastic job as the incredibly complicated character,  Batman. Well this past weekend he’s been given the Oscar for his role in The Fighter.  Well deserved. Read on for a review of the movie compliments Skewed & Reviewed Magazine and perhaps you can enjoy watching The Fighter in your room at an Accent Inn.

The Fighter

Based on a true story, The Fighter tells the tale of two brother boxers. Retired and addicted to drugs, Dicky Eklund (Christian Bale) lives life as the town hero while dreaming of a comeback career. Meanwhile his talented younger brother Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg) is reaching his fighting apex. That is, if he can choose to move past family ties that are holding him from success.

The surprising sibling chemistry of actors Bale and Wahlberg is the successful binding force in the The Fighter. The skill of these two brings relevance to the film for an audience that might otherwise step past a sports story by giving it heart. (more…)

Family Businesses: The Secrets of Successful Succession Part 1

Monday, February 28th, 2011
Mandy Farmer, President of Accent Inns

Mandy Farmer, President of the family business

I personally love family businesses, and not just because I am in one!  I love how it can give people the opportunity to fast track themselves to their full potential.  I love how family businesses seem to have more values, ethics and personality rather  than the faceless “Big Boys”.  I love how family relationships can turn exponential when a father becomes a friend, a colleague, a business partner.

Of course, family businesses can go the other way. I can’t think of anything worse when family relationships turn sour because of the business. I’m a firm believer that the family has to come first.  As for myself; we are a 3rd generation family business and I confess, we’ve gotten darn good at succession issues.  I continually get asked how we did it, so here are my Secrets to Successful Succession, keeping not only the business in tact but more importantly our relationship. Alex Fraser, son of Julia Fraser, wins silver at the BC summer Games

This July Alex Fraser, son of the famous Julia Fraser (Regional Sales Manager for Accent Inns Kelowna and Kamloops) won a silver medal at the BC Summer Games in Langley. Alex played for the Thompson-Okanagan Team which finished 1st in their pool which earned them a semi-final game against Vancouver Island. In the semi-final game, they defeated Vancouver Island 8-7 (tough for Accent Inn Victoria staff routing for the Vancouver Island team). “It was a thrilling game and it was probably the best the Thompson-Okanagan Team has ever played”, said Julia Fraser, Regional Sales Manager and proud Mom. In the Championship Final for the Gold, they lost a heartbreaker to Fraser River/Delta 6-3 (a tough loss for our Accent Inn Vancouver Airport staff)

“Iron Man” Alex Fraser played all 5 games, pitched and played first base.

• Gender Discrimination – both sexes guilty

Friday, July 9th, 2010
Finger to mouth showing sshhh sound

Both sexes are guilty of gender discrimination

Confession:

I admit it.  I’m not your typical CEO.  I’m a woman, I’m in my mid thirties and I live in a town that’s known for its “Old Boys Club”.

This was brought home to me early in my career when I went to our local business club for lunch, one of those traditional gentlemen’s clubs that now accepts  women as members.  I walked in with my dad, a regular there, and followed his lead to a long communal table in the middle of the room, clearly marked, “Nooners”.

How do you handle time management?

Time Management shouldn't be so confusing

Time Management: Mystery or Magic?

Ok here we go into the wonderful and sometimes mystical world of “time management”.

When you ask  many young and even seasoned professionals about their time management skills they suddenly lower the head and speak into their chest just like a child who knows he’s done something wrong.  Time management is a powerful tool and I’ve met several successful business people and athletic achievers that tout it as “their” secret to success. A couple of great examples for my are my former boss and mentor, Terry Farmer, and many of the excellent athletes that make up the Camosun Chargers College athletic program. These “kids” really have it together! We all know we need time management skills but either feel like we’ve never really achieved what we need to, or even worse, are completely intimidated by the subject. Find your examples as I have. They are all around you I promise. (more…)

Anne-marie and her Dad

Anne-marie and her Dad

With Father’s day just around the corner I began thinking of all the wonderful things that a Dad could do with his daughter. Am I qualified to write such a list? Well the fact that I was a kid once myself (hard to believe I know…), I had an awesome father who really showed me and taught me about the world around us, and the most import reference I can offer is that I am the father of  beautiful, talented  9 year old Anne-Marie.

So with all those qualifications and the thoughts of father’s day looming, in this article I have reflected on some of the ideas and things I have done and shared with my daughter of the past many years.

Accent Inns BC Hotel Sales team heads north by RV

Recently the Accent Inns sales team, Donna Price, Helen Wright, Julia Fraser and Kim Jones set out on a 3,000 km journey to re-position 2 Fraserway RV camper trucks from Vancouver to Whitehorse, making sales calls along the way.

First of all we would like to thank Fraserway RV for setting us up in their lovely brand new truck and campers, our homes away from home!  The 2011 Ford 450 Supercab trucks were not only spacious and comfortable but they were very easy for us large truck novice gals to drive! (and the talk of the towns as we rolled in.) (more…)
