2014 Consumer Electronics Show

Saturday, February 1st, 2014

11972472643_8873061469_mC.E.S. in Las Vegas was the biggest and best showcase yet for all things technology. This was our third year covering the show and it continues to grow each year as it has sprawled beyond the massive convention center to also include convention space at the Venetian and several hotel suites across town where companies base themselves for private meetings.

Unlike most other trade shows and conventions, C.E.S. is home to everything from computer and console hardware and accessories to more innovative products which include medical products, audio technology, television, home appliances, vehicle tech, and much more. Simply put if it runs on batteries or electricity, you can bet there is a place for it at the show. (more…)

Battlefield 4 video game by EA

Battlefield 4 video game by EA

In a reported statement to Polygon by an EA spokesperson, the company appears to confirm that EA has ordered Dice to stop all work on the new Star Wars game and Mirrors Edge games in order to fix the numerous issues facing Battlefield 4.

The series is no stranger to bugs as Battlefield Vietnam and Battlefield 3 were almost unplayable at launch on PC until a plethora of patches were released to help resolve the issues. (more…)

Playstation 4 (PS4) or Xbox for Christmas ?

Saturday, December 7th, 2013

SKNR Cover Sep2013With all of the hype and hyperbole over the launch of the Playstation 4 and Xbox One starting to fade now that both systems have launched, it is time for us to give both of them a grade and that grade is Incomplete. Now I am not bashing on either of the systems but rather stating that consumers simply do not have enough information to properly evaluate their systems.

When the Playstation 3 launched, there were issues over the price of the unit, the lack of titles available and many cited Resistance as the only solid release exclusive for the PS 3 and waited patiently for future titles. This time out the Playstation 4 has Killzone: Shadow Fall and Knack as their main launch exclusives and offers several free to play games via the Playstation Store. While this is a good step in the right direction especially with a nice selection of third party games such as the latest offerings in the Assassins Creed and Call of Duty series. Victoria Truck Light Parade – watch it, support it

Friday, December 6th, 2013

IMGP0322bBreaker breaker… looks like we got us a convoy

This Saturday night, December 7th, the annual IEOA (Equipment owners association) truck light parade will head through Victoria BC.  From 5:45 pm to 8:30 pm , main streets, side streets and even back streets will be lit up by some of the most colorful collection of vehicles ever seen. Cement trucks, dump trucks, slingers, crane trucks, fire trucks, buses and more will form into a convoy and pass before thousands of local families and visitors before ending up as an incredibly bright display at Western Speedway.  The truck owners and companies, their staff, family and friends all come together to pay for and create some incredible displays. These trucks take hours and hours of paid and volunteer time to complete. Every hour that one of these trucks is not “working” that’s money they are not earning for their owners. It’s a huge commitment by all the participants and we thank them so much. With the additional help of a few sponsors (Accent Inns is proud to be one), some great local media support and the generosity of our local municipalities and police departments this event finally comes together. But let’s remember why this started many years ago… to raise awareness and support for those in need. For many years now the Truck light parade has raised 10′s of thousands of pounds of food and $$ for Victoria’s local food banks. (more…)

2013 blizzcon

Recently my wife and I traveled to beautiful Anaheim California to cover the 2013 Blizzcon Convention.  The convention sold out online in moments and drew fans of Blizzard Entertainment from around the world for a weekend of news, panels, previews, music, Cosplay, and more.  Those who were not able to get into the convention were able to follow along via DirecTV or through online streaming which could be purchased from the company. EA Sports Amazing FIFA 14

Monday, November 25th, 2013

EA Sports FIFA 14With the worldwide impact of FIFA at an all-time high, EA Sports has captured the majesty of the sport of Soccer with the amazing FIFA 14. The game is available for the PC, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360 systems and is due soon for the next generation consoles.

While I played Soccer in High School I will admit that my knowledge of the professional game is limited as names such as Pele, Beckham, and Donovan are the players that I would be able to identify the easiest. Regardless of your level of skill and experience, FIFA 14 has something for you from eye-popping graphics to the most realistic action and player options of any soccer game to date. (more…)

It’s Movember in Kelowna

Monday, November 18th, 2013

November has become a very special month around many offices & businesses. Usual dress code standards tend to relax a bit as many gents around the globe take part in Movember.  Our team at the Accent Inn Kelowna has most definitely embraced this trend and we’re proud of them. Even though we have free razors available at our front desks, this is one time when we’re glad to see team members let their five o’clock shadows (at least above their lip) grow on for the cause.  If you’d like to help them raise money for the cause please click here to donate.

Accent Inn Kelowna Team Members “growing one” for Movember

Here’s some background on Movember:

Movember is a fun play on November and men  across the globe join together to raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues. Movember has become a very special way for men to draw attention to cancers like prostate and testicular cancer. Men who take part in Movember are affectionately called Mo Bros and start November clean shaven but then allow their mustaches to grow and grow as they fund raise for the cause. From 30 Mo Bros in Melbourne, Australia in 2003 to 1.1 million Mo’s in 2012, Movember has grown to a global movement that is changing the face or rather faces of men’s health.

Remembrance Day has Global Significance

Thursday, November 7th, 2013

remembrance-day-poppySo here we are coming up on another Remembrance Day. I’ve previously written about the importance of not only remembering those who given their lives but also thanking those who have or are putting their lives in harm’s way all to protect us. Our way of life.  This year let’s look at Remembrance Day with another perspective.

Let me preface this by saying I’m not a professor, philosopher or any other professional that would be dedicated to the understanding of cultural and or significant celebrations. So who am I to comment? A proud Canadian citizen, someone who’s lost family members due to conflict, a person that has had the opportunity to connect with veterans, serving military, legion members and those who take special care of those who served. I suggest folks visit a place like the Broadmead lodge in Victoria B.C. for a good perspective on those to whom we owe so much. (more…)

Steve Dotto tech expert, social media camp speaker

Steve Dotto – Tech Expert & World Famous Speaker

Do you need a kick in your…..Social Media?         If you answered yes then you should attend one of the upcoming Social Media Bootcamps travelling around the province. Victoria BC is very lucky as every May brings not only incredible floral displays but the equally visually stimulating Social Media Camp. This has become the largest social media event in Canada! But wait, there’s more…..

The guys behind this great event (Chris & Paul – their country album will be released next summer) have also put together a number of one-day workshops in select cities during the fall.

Anyone and everyone who needs, likes or just has to use Social Media should try to make it to Social Media Camp in May. Of course the organizers realize that there are folks who just can’t attend the big conference because they must attend their mother in-laws’ birthday (been there). Well for all of you they have taken the show on the road and these one day bootcamps will give you access to some of the great knowledge and training that Social Media Camp offers. (more…)
