Family Support In BC Has A New Name

Friday, October 2nd, 2015

Family Support Institute of BC LogoIt’s Official – Family Support in BC has a new name.

October 2, 2015: New Westminster, B.C. – The Family Support Institute Board of Directors, over the last several years, has been contemplating how FSI can be better represented as having a provincial scope. Their official name was the West Coast Family Support Institute Society which implied that they only served families living on the Westcoast of BC, when they actively serve people ALL ACROSS our province. At FSI’s AGM on June 12, 2015, the membership unanimously voted to approve a special resolution to approve a society name change from the “West Coast Family Support Institute Society” to the “Family Support Institute of BC Society” (FSIBC). They feel this name change will help people to see that they are a provincial society in all aspects of their work.

FSI is celebrating their 30th anniversary of supporting families this year. The first 30 years have been so fruitful and filled with accomplishments including:Family Support Institute 30th anniversary

250 volunteers who support families

6000 families supported each year

14 workshops developed and presented by families

FREE publications for families with growing subscriptions

Our first Summer Institute on Inclusive Education for school personnel

Leaders in 7 communities hosting conversations about employment and job readiness

Invitations to most government tables to talk about the needs of families with families – BC’s first website for families looking to hire support workers – BC’s first database for families on all supports and services available in BC

In the spirit of celebration in their 30th year we have also changed their look with their logo to compliment their name change and to highlight the fact that all of their work is about “families supporting families”.  If you would like copies of their new FSI brochure, please contact their office at 604-540-8374 / 1-800-441-5403 or email:

Top Ten Tips For Taking Your Family On A Business Trip

Family in car on road trip

Take your family on your next business trip

When my children were young, my job involved travelling extensively around Europe and North America and I was forever saying to a business colleague or client while in some strange foreign clime, “I wish my wife could see this” or, “My son Joshua, or Adam would have loved to play on that.” Looking back I don’t know why I never thought to take them, but it was probably because they all involved several expensive flights. There’s been lots of media attention lately for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge which is really cool, In fact I did that challenge myself (John – editor) We want to make sure though that a hardworking group of volunteers and cyclists from the ALS Cycle of Hope are also given accolades for their efforts to raise awareness, support and research dollars for ALS. These folks did far more than just dump ice water on their heads. The following post is an excerpt from the ALS Cycle for Hope post event wrap-up for 2014.  Accent Inns has been thrilled to support these awesome volunteers!   Each year, for the past three years, the Cycle of Hope Society proudly offers a variety of exciting fundraising events and fun community/family cycling events in Kelowna and Victoria.  (more…)

Arthritis Society Gets a Helping Hotel Hand

Wednesday, June 18th, 2014

Arthritis SocietyVictoria BC, June 18, 2014 –Spring 2014 Through connecting with hotel executives at several events, representatives from the Arthritis Society learned of the many not-for profit organizations that Accent Inns has managed to assist and decided to learn more about the local hotel chain.

The surprise came when after meeting with the chain’s Marketing and Communications Manager, John Espley, they found that Accent Inns also wanted to learn more about The Society. After several months of networking and a few meetings in both Victoria and Vancouver BC, it was agreed that Accent Inns would extend a helping hotel hand and support the Arthritis Society, BC & Yukon Division through the company’s InnAid program. Assistance would come in a few ways including accommodations. (more…)

11972472643_8873061469_mC.E.S. in Las Vegas was the biggest and best showcase yet for all things technology. This was our third year covering the show and it continues to grow each year as it has sprawled beyond the massive convention center to also include convention space at the Venetian and several hotel suites across town where companies base themselves for private meetings.

Unlike most other trade shows and conventions, C.E.S. is home to everything from computer and console hardware and accessories to more innovative products which include medical products, audio technology, television, home appliances, vehicle tech, and much more. Simply put if it runs on batteries or electricity, you can bet there is a place for it at the show. (more…)

In a reported statement to Polygon by an EA spokesperson, the company appears to confirm that EA has ordered Dice to stop all work on the new Star Wars game and Mirrors Edge games in order to fix the numerous issues facing Battlefield 4.

Playstation 4 (PS4) or Xbox for Christmas ?

Saturday, December 7th, 2013

SKNR Cover Sep2013With all of the hype and hyperbole over the launch of the Playstation 4 and Xbox One starting to fade now that both systems have launched, it is time for us to give both of them a grade and that grade is Incomplete. Now I am not bashing on either of the systems but rather stating that consumers simply do not have enough information to properly evaluate their systems.

When the Playstation 3 launched, there were issues over the price of the unit, the lack of titles available and many cited Resistance as the only solid release exclusive for the PS 3 and waited patiently for future titles. This time out the Playstation 4 has Killzone: Shadow Fall and Knack as their main launch exclusives and offers several free to play games via the Playstation Store. While this is a good step in the right direction especially with a nice selection of third party games such as the latest offerings in the Assassins Creed and Call of Duty series. Victoria Truck Light Parade – watch it, support it

Friday, December 6th, 2013

IMGP0322bBreaker breaker… looks like we got us a convoy

This Saturday night, December 7th, the annual IEOA (Equipment owners association) truck light parade will head through Victoria BC.  From 5:45 pm to 8:30 pm , main streets, side streets and even back streets will be lit up by some of the most colorful collection of vehicles ever seen. Cement trucks, dump trucks, slingers, crane trucks, fire trucks, buses and more will form into a convoy and pass before thousands of local families and visitors before ending up as an incredibly bright display at Western Speedway.  The truck owners and companies, their staff, family and friends all come together to pay for and create some incredible displays. These trucks take hours and hours of paid and volunteer time to complete. Every hour that one of these trucks is not “working” that’s money they are not earning for their owners. It’s a huge commitment by all the participants and we thank them so much. With the additional help of a few sponsors (Accent Inns is proud to be one), some great local media support and the generosity of our local municipalities and police departments this event finally comes together. But let’s remember why this started many years ago… to raise awareness and support for those in need. For many years now the Truck light parade has raised 10’s of thousands of pounds of food and $$ for Victoria’s local food banks. (more…)
