Pass it along

Tuesday, November 13th, 2012

There is a line in a song by the British rock band Chumbawamba that says “Pass it along by word of mouse”   This is not just a great lyric but a statement that pretty much defines our world today.

Within moments of taking a photo, receiving a video, a joke or a special offer, we pass it along to all those folks on our contact list without a moment’s though.  But should we perhaps give it a moment’s thought?

How many of us pass it along without removing the email addresses of those dozens of people who have passed it along to us?  How many of us pass it along to people we barely know without a moment’s thought as to their political or religious views, their workplace email policies or even the validity of the content? The Deeley Motorcycle Exhibition—Canada’s Largest Private Collection

Saturday, October 13th, 2012

The following is a reprint from Friction Zone Magazine and we thank them.

Mr. Motorcycle. Nearly everyone in Canada knew Frederick Trevor (Trev) Deeley by that nickname. After all, by the time he passed away at age 82 in March of 2002, he had six solid and very successful decades behind him of racing, selling, collecting, customizing, designing, and well, just generally promoting all things motorcycle. Trev Deeley was one of those individuals who managed to combine his birthright with passion, shrewd business acumen, fearlessness, and intelligence so spectacularly that he left behind not only an empire, but also a hefty legacy. In his case, the empire he built rests on Fred Deeley Ltd., which is the sole Canadian distributor (and the only one in the world not partially or wholly owned by the factory) of Harley Davidson motorcycles and branded merchandise. On the legacy side, Deeley also left behind Canada’s largest private collection of motorcycles—a 280-strong (and still growing) dream garage of machines that ranges across 60 marques and illustrates the long history of the Deeley’s involvement in the industry.  (more…)

Treasure Hunting in BC

Thursday, August 9th, 2012

If you’ve ever fancied yourself to be a bit like Indiana Jones searching for ancient artifacts or Jacques Cousteau combing the ocean floor for pirate treasure, you may be interested in a slightly more modern version of these activities – the garage sale.

That’s right.  Today’s garage and yard sales are the way that modern urbanites get an opportunity to study both the current and past lifestyles through the discarded treasures of their fellow man (and more often their fellow woman).

When visiting another city, there are plenty of opportunities to see the place as the city officials wish you to – tourist attractions, scenic walks, restaurants and hotels – but attending a garage sale gives you the opportunity to view those city dwellers in their natural habitat.  You may even get a glimpse of their private gardens, their pets and their friends. BC Day – is it just another long weekend?

Monday, August 6th, 2012

BC Flag

For some people BC Day (Aug 6, 2012) is just another excuse for a long summer weekend.  But for many, it means much more than that.

People who grew up in BC may sometimes take this province for granted but for those of us who are here by choice, it is really a very special place.  We came here for many reasons but no matter the reason, most of us are totally enthralled by the weather, the natural beauty, the diversity of the population and the healthy lifestyle. Whether we moved from the East Coast, the Middle East or the Far East – British Columbia is special in so many ways.

Anybody who has ever visited BC goes away with tales of the beauty of the mountains, the ocean and the parks. But for those of us who live here, there is a great deal more to celebrate.  We may get used to living in such amazing beauty.  We may even complain about the weather. But given the choice most of us would not live anywhere else. (more…)

Snowshoeing at Grouse on the North shore 2011

When I was a kid growing up on the East Coast one of my favourite winter activities was grabbing my brother’s wooden snowshoes, rounding up my uncle’s Springer Spaniel (Blueboy), and heading out into the woods.  “Cousin Blue” and I spent many hours cutting new trails and following the ones we had previously created.  Of course, things did not always go as planned……  (more…)

Third X Files movie on the way

Accent Inn Burnaby BC Hotel close to the movie studios

Are you a fan of the X-Files?  Did you know the original TV series was filmed in and around Vancouver B.C.?  Apparently because of the “dark” nature or “feel” that the show had, the grey weather that Vancouver often experiences was perfect.  How about that, it actually paid to be rainy! The series was filmed in many different locations around southern B.C. (originally) but made it’s home at Bridge Studios right across the Street from the Accent Inn Burnaby hotel.  Although the Accent Inn never had the opportunity to host either of the Stars, the General Manager and staff met many of the “villains”, if you can call monsters and aliens villains. I myself even had the opportunity to meet one of the actors staying at the Burnaby hotel, who thanks to very cool make-up, played two completely different “creatures” in two different episodes. Well for all you other fans out there (I even have the album..)  our house reviewer Gareth has news of a possible third coming…  read more at Skewed and Reviewed
