Video Game Console Wars

Skewed & Reviewed Accent Inns entertainment contributor

Our friend Gareth at Skewed & Reviewed has taken a really good look at the major game consoles. If you’re like me, a middle aged guy with children, video games are a fact of life. I know a ton of Accent Inns guests (mainly the fella’s…) really like to play the occasional video game and it certainly seems to be the new “silent babysitter” for many of our children. Some may think this is a bad thing but there are positive roles video games can take. My family has some really good times playing video games together and with the interactive console types like the Wii, even some exercise can be had. Wii bowling tournaments are a fun activity in our house. Our system even replaced our old DVD player so now we can watch DVD’s, Blue ray, online movies and play games all in one small console. The key thing to remember is balance. Make sure you and your kids also experience the great outdoors and get regular exercise.

Of course when you’re traveling,  look for hotels (Accent Inns is one) , that offer free WiFi so you can keep playing those games on your laptops, Ipods, Ipads etc….

So for all you gamers or perhaps parents,  that need to decide what system to buy little Johnny for Christmas, Gareth offers some great insights. click here to read Gareth's post.

What Father’s Day means to us Dads

Friday, June 17th, 2011
Victoria hotel employee John Espley and his Daughter

Being a father is a wonderful Experience

This weekend is Father’s day. Last year I presented a blog post about the top 10 things a father and daughter could do together.  This year I thought I’d offer some insights, my observations on what effect being a father has on a fella and in my opinion, the most important thing  Fathers can do for their children.

First off let me give away a secret, dispel a myth, breakdown the facade that us men put forth (sorry guys).  You may see us as macho men, big strong guys that can build anything or tear anything down, the creators of life’s inventions, the leaders of men, captains of industry, masters of our domains and the heads of the household (ok I was pushing it on that last one…). In truth we are at our very best , pushed to achieve, most vulnerable and most satisfied when we are known as “Dad”.  Now I know some of you may scoff at this notion, believe that I exaggerate but alas I have real proof. ...read more on the effects of fathers day

Gateway Theatre Richmond BC

The Forbidden Phoenix

2011 Opening Night: Friday, April 8 at the Gateway theatre, Richmond BC

The show features a cast of sixteen, and a ten piece orchestra playing both Western and Chinese instruments. This fable begins, as fables do, with a hero. Ours is an unlikely one, a trickster named Sun Wukong (the Monkey King) who leaves his home in China for the West in hopes of finding a better life for his son. There he encounters a greedy man who wants to destroy Gold Mountain, the final bastion of nature, by digging through it to build a railway line. Betrayed by this villain and condemned to a lifetime of separation from his son he finally finds a way home, only to discover that his boy has been turned against him. He must win back his son’s love even if it costs him his life.

The Fighter

One of the young Hollywood stars I’ve certainly enjoyed watching is Christian Bale. I think he did a fantastic job as the incredibly complicated character,  Batman. Well this past weekend he’s been given the Oscar for his role in The Fighter.  Well deserved. Read on for a review of the movie compliments Skewed & Reviewed Magazine and perhaps you can enjoy watching The Fighter in your room at an Accent Inn.

The Fighter

Based on a true story, The Fighter tells the tale of two brother boxers. Retired and addicted to drugs, Dicky Eklund (Christian Bale) lives life as the town hero while dreaming of a comeback career. Meanwhile his talented younger brother Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg) is reaching his fighting apex. That is, if he can choose to move past family ties that are holding him from success.

The surprising sibling chemistry of actors Bale and Wahlberg is the successful binding force in the The Fighter. The skill of these two brings relevance to the film for an audience that might otherwise step past a sports story by giving it heart. read more about The Fighter....

Third X Files movie on the way

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010
Accent Inn Burnaby hotel

Accent Inn Burnaby BC Hotel close to the movie studios

Are you a fan of the X-Files?  Did you know the original TV series was filmed in and around Vancouver B.C.?  Apparently because of the “dark” nature or “feel” that the show had, the grey weather that Vancouver often experiences was perfect.  How about that, it actually paid to be rainy! The series was filmed in many different locations around southern B.C. (originally) but made it’s home at Bridge Studios right across the Street from the Accent Inn Burnaby hotel.  Although the Accent Inn never had the opportunity to host either of the Stars, the General Manager and staff met many of the “villains”, if you can call monsters and aliens villains. I myself even had the opportunity to meet one of the actors staying at the Burnaby hotel, who thanks to very cool make-up, played two completely different “creatures” in two different episodes. Well for all you other fans out there (I even have the album..)  our house reviewer Gareth has news of a possible third coming…  read more at Skewed and Reviewed

Paintball 2 the game?

paintball 2 the game

paintball 2 the game

I’m a middle aged (yes, don’t sound so surprised) guy that likes playing the occasional video game. What guy doesn’t? It’s even better when I can hang out with my daughter and play games together. What can my wife say about that…..lol

I must admit though that I’m not up on all the latest (still enjoy my play station 2) games out there so I’m really enjoying our new partner, Skewed & Reviewed.  So much to learn.

This latest entry , Gareth speaks with paint ball legend Greg Hastings.  Legend? I didn’t even know you could play paintball on TV let alone the fact that they had a legend!

Apparently they have over 1000 real players for this latest version including moms (very cool)and  Ninja’s and they make up their own rules? Gotta love the world of online gaming.

Click here to read the full interview with Greg Hastings.
