Taking the Plunge in a Turkish Bath

Tuesday, July 31st, 2012

Part One - Jordan

Olive Baptista is a Specialty Tour, Luxury Trains & Cruise Consultant at UNIGLOBE Geo Travel in Nanaimo as well as an intrepid traveler and adventurer.  Olive shares her adventures on a recent trip to Jordan and Turkey.

Ephesus Gals

I just returned from a great tour of Jordan and Turkey where I traveled with a group of lady friends who are very adventurous and always eager to see and do things. Both countries offer a wide range of places to visit and explore,a  variety of food and fabulous  shopping . Some of us had visited India together in 2011 and hence I was aware of the things to add in the itinerary for each day.

Our flights were out of Vancouver so we headed out the night prior and stayed at the Accent Inn Vancouver Airport . The friendly and helpful staff makes it very convenient for a stopover.

Soon after our arrival Wadi Rum and a ride in the desert up and down the dunes in an open jeep got the adrenaline flowing. Some of us jumped out of the jeep and tried to walk up the dunes. The sand was heavy and the trudge up was exhausting. It was fascinating to see the young guide run up. We felt age was definitely catching up with us as our steps were slow but sure.  Read more about this amazing trip

Hash House Harriers

Tuesday, July 17th, 2012

Have you ever seen a group of totally diverse and unrelated people running madly about, following symbols marked in flour and shouting nonsensical terms like “On On?”  If you have, they would have been Hash House Harriers – an International Drinking Group with a running problem.

Although I had actually heard of this group, I didn’t really understand what they were all about until I experienced my first Darkside, Leapday, After Dark Run on Feb 29th.

I went expecting an athletic adventure, possibly a race.  What I found was a totally quirky activity that was as much social as athletic.  The group consisted of both genders and ages ranging from late teens to seventies and even a few dogs.  The only thing that many people seemed to have in common is that they had either worked or studied in at least one other country. Celebrating The Titanic

Amazing Mural of the Titanic

Every once in a while there is an event that we know will stay with us in long-term memory as a very special night. And while it seemed a bit wrong to be attending a party that re-enacted the hours before such a tragic event, the Titanic Party that I attended was one of those nights.

Everyone that attended knows that our friend who played hostess is an amazing party planner but I don’t think anybody was prepared for the large mural of the Titanic and several shimmering icebergs that adorned the garage as we approached her home.   She had spent most of the day painting the mural, the final step in months of planning and preparation.  Both she and her husband proved to be amazing hosts for this unique event held on the 100th anniversary of the tragedy. Travelling with your Grandchildren

Grandkids helping Granpa to load car

This is a great time in our lives when we’re able to travel on our own as well as go on trips with our wonderful grandchildren. We can include the kids parents (our children) or not, and gear our travel and activities to our grandchildren of all ages. Sometimes the kids are even more well behaved without their parents! However having the parents included is less responsibility on us and creates great quality family time. The grandchildren are so appreciative and it is absolutely fantastic to strengthen our rapport with our younger generation. The wonderful memories created on these trips will stay with them for the rest of their lives, and long after we have gone.

Most grandparents are a little intimidated about keeping the youngsters occupied, so I have
attempted to list a number of activities at all our hotels throughout this magnificent province of ours. The only thing you have to do is match up which activities are most appropriate for the ages of your

grandchildren and then call our central reservations and book your trip.

Now that summer is here (no comments on the weather please) so are the “boys of summer”. Sure, sure it’s often heard that Canadians are hockey people but that’s only true part of the year. It’s time to get out of the arena and enjoy some incredible summertime entertainment. The Vancouver Canadians play at the Scotiabank field at Nat Bailey stadium. The stadium has been around since 1951 and hosting some of the best sports entertainment anywhere in the Pacific Northwest. The Vancouver Canadians are a minor league baseball team located in Vancouver, British Columbia.  The C’s have previously affiliated with the Oakland Athletics between 2000-2010 but have become the Northwest League affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. They are the only Canadian team in the “affiliated” minor leagues.(wikipedia) ...read more about "our night at the park"

Father’s Day Reflections

Friday, June 15th, 2012

fathers day Victoria BCSo here we are. Another Father’s day approaches. I know Mom’s rule the world and we wouldn’t be anywhere (or even here) without them but… Father’s day  has a little different feeling about it. Ya, Ya  I know your saying to yourself, He’s a father so of course he feels that way. Perhaps, but I think there’s more to it. I think mother’s day is rightfully about celebrating and thanking mother’s for their caring, their nurturing and giving us life. Science tells us there’s a special bond between a mother and child and I tend to agree. For a father that relationship is something to a certain extent that must be created. Of course father’s can be nurturing and have a bond to our children but scientifically mom’s the word. So Father’s day is a real privilege, an honor. This is just my opinion but let me elaborate… ..read more on reflections of fathers day

City Opera – Fallujah

Monday, May 7th, 2012

In the world of Not-For-Profits and Arts and Culture it’s great to report that one of the organizations we are proud to work with is getting global attention and incredible support.

City Opera Vancouver’s Board of Directors has announced that the company has been awarded a commissioning grant of $250,000 US from the Annenberg Foundation, in connection with the philanthropic multimedia organization Explore.
This extraordinary sum is believed to be the largest single commissioning grant in Canadian history. The working title: FALLUJAH.

The Annenberg Foundation, a private US-based family foundation, provides funding and support to non-profit organizations around the world. Explore, a signature project of the Annenberg Foundation, developed the concept of the project and presented the commissioning grant to City Opera Vancouver. It is awarded for the creation of a new chamber opera, to be developed over a two-year period. The story is based on the real experiences of US Marine Corps Sergeant Christian Ellis at the Battle of Fallujah in 2004. ...read more about Fallujah

3rd Annual Fishing Buddies Program Attracts New Anglers

Friday, April 27th, 2012

Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC

The Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC (FFSBC) is again recruiting experienced anglers to reveal the pleasures of freshwater fishing to friends, family and colleagues during the third annual Fishing Buddies Sweepstakes. Designed to introduce new anglers to sport fishing, Fishing Buddies also rewards anglers for doing what they love and sharing their fishing knowledge. Participation has grown consistently since the program launched in 2010 and significant growth in participation is expected for the third year.

“When it comes to introducing someone new to fishing, who better than experienced anglers who are passionate about it? They can speak directly to the pleasures of going fishing whether it’s half a day at an urban location or a fishing weekend at a more remote lake,” says FFSBC President Don Peterson. “They know the fish and the fishing spots and can help unravel the mysteries of freshwater fishing for the new angler.”
