BC Day – is it just another long weekend?

BC Flag

For some people BC Day (Aug 6, 2012) is just another excuse for a long summer weekend.  But for many, it means much more than that.

People who grew up in BC may sometimes take this province for granted but for those of us who are here by choice, it is really a very special place.  We came here for many reasons but no matter the reason, most of us are totally enthralled by the weather, the natural beauty, the diversity of the population and the healthy lifestyle. Whether we moved from the East Coast, the Middle East or the Far East – British Columbia is special in so many ways.

Anybody who has ever visited BC goes away with tales of the beauty of the mountains, the ocean and the parks. But for those of us who live here, there is a great deal more to celebrate.  We may get used to living in such amazing beauty.  We may even complain about the weather. But given the choice most of us would not live anywhere else.

With BC Day coming soon, let’s take a moment to reflect on what it means to live here.  Let’s also take a moment to think of special ways to celebrate being a British Columbian.  The most important thing is to do something local – visit a Municipal or Provincial Park, shop in a local store, visit a local attraction, stay in a local hotel or eat in a local restaurant.  It is this support of local businesses that shows just how proud we are to be a part of this great province.

In BC we love our trees

Let’s also remember the contribution of the First Nations who have contributed so much to our rich history.  It would be a great opportunity to visit a museum or attraction celebrating our many First Nations.

While the rest of the world may sometimes think we are a bit kooky  – tree huggers, outdoor fanatics, and flower-counters.  We know that we are indeed lucky to live in the best place on earth.  So, whether you are a British Columbian by birth or by choice – celebrate your good fortune on Aug 6 by making a special effort to do at least one thing that celebrates British Columbia.  Stay local.  Stay Real!
